Six-time Grand Slam-winning tennis player Boris Becker arrived at Southwark Crown Court in central London on Thursday for a hearing regarding his alleged failure to disclose assets relating to his 2017 bankruptcy claim.
Becker denied all 28 counts against him, including charges that he had concealed tennis silverware and made nearly £400,000 (€442,000, $523,000) in bank transfers to his ex-wife and current partner after declaring bankruptcy.
He is also said to have hidden £1,000,000 (€1,106,154, $1,308,000) from trustees who were overlooking his bankruptcy, not declaring ownership of an apartment in the affluent London borough of Chelsea as well as concealing accounts and property in his native Germany.
A partner of the law firm representing Becker said he would be cleared of the charges.
“Mr Becker’s side of the story has not yet come out but it will do in due course at the appropriate time in court, he’s entirely innocent of these charges and intends to defend himself vigorously to clear his name,” said Aaron Stevens.
Becker became the youngest ever winner of Wimbledon in 1985 at the age of 17 before winning it a further two times.
He won nearly 50 titles over the course of his career. He faces up to seven years behind bars if found guilty of the charges when the trial takes place next September.
