Mark Melancon may or may not close games in San Diego. He might have made more money elsewhere. The 35-year-old reliever — who already had a $62 million payday in his last contract — simply looked at the Padres as too good of an opportunity to pass up when they started calling late in a slow offseason.
“It didn’t matter who came on when,” Melancon said. “It was more about the winning part. It was a pretty easy decision once they were in the mix.”
